How to Respond to a 4-Star Google Review

Almost perfect — find out what would earn the 5th star and close the gap.

A 4-star review is a compliment with a caveat. The customer enjoyed your service but something held them back from giving top marks. Many businesses ignore 4-star reviews because they seem "good enough." That is a mistake — 4-star reviewers are the easiest to convert to 5-star advocates because they are already almost there. The one thing they withheld often points to a small, fixable gap in your service or product.

1Thank them genuinely

A 4-star review deserves a warm thank-you. The customer had a good experience — lead with that. "Thank you for the wonderful feedback — we're glad you enjoyed your experience" sets the right tone. Do not open by asking why it was not 5 stars; that comes later and should be positioned as curiosity, not disappointment. The reviewer should feel appreciated, not interrogated.

2Acknowledge any hint about the missing star

Some 4-star reviews include a subtle clue — "Everything was great, but parking was a hassle" or "Loved the product, wish the instructions were clearer." If the review contains a hint, address it: "We hear you on the parking — we're exploring partnerships with nearby garages." If there is no hint, it is okay to ask: "We'd love to know what would have made this a perfect 5 — feel free to share." This shows you are not satisfied with "good enough" either.

3Share what you are improving

Even if the review did not identify a specific gap, use your reply to mention a recent improvement. "We've just added online booking" or "We recently updated our packaging" shows that you are constantly improving — which is exactly the message a 4-star reviewer wants to hear. It reassures them that their next experience might earn that 5th star without them having to ask for it.

4Invite them back with enthusiasm

Close with genuine enthusiasm about their return. "We hope to earn that 5th star next time!" with a smiley energy (but no actual emoji) feels optimistic and fun. 4-star reviewers are your warmest prospects — they liked you enough to write a positive review. Make the invitation feel like a continuation of a good relationship, not a sales pitch.

Example response

Thank you for the great review! We're thrilled you enjoyed the experience. We noticed you mentioned the wait for a table — we've just launched online reservations to fix exactly that. We hope to earn that 5th star on your next visit! — The team at Luigi's
