How to Respond to a 3-Star Google Review

The most convertible review — half-satisfied customers are one great experience away from becoming fans.

3-star reviews are often the most valuable feedback a business receives. The customer is saying: "You were okay, but not great." That is specific, actionable information. These reviewers are also the most likely to change their rating after a good response — they are sitting on the fence and your reply determines which side they fall on. Businesses that respond to 3-star reviews with specific improvements see a higher rate of updated ratings than those that respond to 1-star reviews.

1Acknowledge both the positive and the gap

3-star reviews typically contain both praise and criticism. Address both in your reply — "We're glad you enjoyed X, and we hear you on Y." This balanced acknowledgment shows maturity. Do not overweight either side. If you focus only on the positive, you look like you are ignoring the criticism. If you focus only on the negative, you look like you missed the compliment. Balance is the key to a 3-star response.

2Ask what would make it a 5-star experience

This is unique to 3-star responses. You can ask a question: "We'd love to know what would have made this a 5-star experience for you." This invites the customer into a constructive dialogue rather than leaving the conversation at a mediocre rating. It also signals to future readers that you actively seek improvement. Most 3-star reviewers appreciate being asked — it makes them feel their opinion matters beyond the star count.

3Describe a specific improvement already underway

If the review mentioned a specific issue, share what you are doing about it. "We've heard similar feedback about wait times and have added a second evening shift" shows that this reviewer's feedback is part of a pattern you are actively addressing. This is more powerful than treating each 3-star review as an isolated incident. Showing systemic improvement builds confidence.

4Invite a return visit to experience the change

Close by expressing confidence that their next visit will be better. "We're confident your next experience will earn that 5th star" is optimistic without being presumptuous. Provide a direct contact for them to share additional feedback. 3-star reviewers are uniquely open to giving you another chance — make the invitation personal and the follow-up easy.

Example response

Thank you for the thoughtful review. We're glad the food hit the mark, and we hear you on the service pace — we've already added weekend staffing to improve wait times. We'd love to know what else would make this a 5-star experience for you. Please reach out to me at manager@restaurant.com — we're committed to earning that last star. — Maria, General Manager
