Why your Google star rating matters

A Harvard Business School study found that a one-star increase in Yelp rating was associated with a 5–9% revenue increase for independent restaurants. Google ratings are a different platform, but the principle is similar: star ratings are one of the first reputation signals potential customers see. Last checked: June 2026.

How Google calculates your star rating

Google uses a simple weighted average: the sum of all review scores divided by the total number of reviews. This means older reviews carry the same weight as new ones. A business with 200 reviews at 3.8 stars needs substantially more 5-star reviews to move the needle than a business with 20 reviews at the same rating. That is exactly what this calculator helps you plan.

How to get more 5-star reviews

The most effective strategy is asking at the right moment — shortly after a positive experience, while the customer is still engaged. Send a direct link to your Google review page via SMS or email, and keep the same compliant workflow for every customer instead of only asking the happiest ones.
