How to Respond to a Google Review With No Text
No comment? You should still reply — here is why and how.
A significant portion of Google reviews are star-only — no written text. These reviews still affect your average rating and are visible to potential customers. Many businesses skip these because there is nothing specific to address. That is a missed opportunity. Responding to text-less reviews shows consistency and signals that you care about every piece of feedback, not just the detailed ones. It also creates an opening for the reviewer to share more.
1For 4-5 star reviews with no text
A simple, warm thank-you is appropriate. "Thank you for the rating! If you have a moment, we'd love to hear what you enjoyed most." This serves two purposes: it acknowledges the positive rating and gently encourages the reviewer to add text, which is more valuable for SEO and for convincing future customers. Keep it brief — two sentences maximum. Do not ask them to change or update their review; just express gratitude and curiosity.
2For 3-star reviews with no text
A 3-star rating without text is frustrating because you do not know what to improve. Respond with: "Thank you for the rating. We'd love to understand what we could improve — feel free to share more details or reach out to us at [email]." This positions you as a business that actively seeks feedback rather than one that only reacts when forced to. The invitation to share details may prompt the reviewer to update their review with specifics.
3For 1-2 star reviews with no text
Low-star reviews without text are the most challenging because you cannot address a specific complaint. Respond with genuine concern: "We're sorry to see this rating. Without more details, it's hard for us to understand what went wrong, but we'd like to make it right. Please reach out to us at [email] so we can discuss your experience." This shows future readers that you take low ratings seriously even when the reviewer gives you nothing to work with. It also gives the reviewer a path to resolution.
4Keep all responses short and varied
For text-less reviews, brevity is critical. Two to three sentences maximum. And never use the exact same response for multiple no-text reviews — if someone scrolls through your responses and sees identical copies, it looks automated and insincere. Vary your wording while keeping the same structure: thank (or acknowledge), invite details, provide a contact. Small wording changes are enough to maintain authenticity.

Common mistakes to avoid
- ×Ignoring all text-less reviews — it creates visible gaps in your response history that attentive customers notice.
- ×Asking the reviewer to change their rating — this violates Google's review policies and can get your response removed.
- ×Using an identical response for every no-text review — it is obvious and counterproductive.
